Sidmouth is a lovely Victorian resort located 15 miles from Exeter. The main beach is mostly made up of pebbles and, when the tide recedes, you’ll find a strip of red sand to explore – plenty of interesting rock pools too. The beach has a gentle slope and is protected by a low sea wall, plus there are groynes in place that help to prevent erosion. You can gaze out at the beautiful cliffs that make up the landscape either side. If you’re driving, there are parking spots around the town; a paid car park by the beach’s eastern end is a great option. Also at the eastern end there’s a slipway, allowing for boat access. And, if you want to hire a kayak or canoe, just head to the western end of the esplanade. Please be aware – no lifeguard is present, so swim only at the marked buoys to avoid the strong current of the offshore breakwaters.
