Nestled between the majestic cliffs of Hillsborough and the famed Ilfracombe lies a hidden gem – Rapparee Cove. This small sandy beach is surrounded by rocks, making it a remarkably sheltered spot, protected from both waves and wind. Once upon a time, the cove boasted an array of bathing huts and was served by a ferry service from Ilfracombe harbour. To access the beach today, one must take the winding but rewarding steps down the cliff. As the tide rolls in, much of the sand at Rapparee is covered. The beach also remains in the shade for a large portion of the day, making it important to plan ahead for a successful beach day. Unfortunately, Rapparee also has a dark past. In October 1796 the London sailed into rough seas and sunk, killing nearly everyone onboard. It is believed that the victims were either French soldiers or slaves from St Lucia, with conflicting reports. The Beach is the final resting place for these unfortunate souls.
