Nestled beneath the marvellous Ness Headland is the alluring beach of Ness Cove. This location is often less occupied than nearby Teignmouth and is highly favoured by locals. Access to this beach is through the remarkable Smuggler’s Tunnel, adding to the alluring mystery of the location. Though it is uncertain whether the tunnel was ever actually used by smugglers, the cove was certainly known to have been the haunt of those who were trading contraband in and out of the country. In order to gain access to the beach, you must traverse slippery steps which may prove difficult for those with mobility issues. Nevertheless, during low tide, you will find an array of coarse sand and fine red shingle unfold before you. Though it may not be the best for sandcastle building, beachgoers, young and old, can immerse themselves in exciting activities such as crab and shellfish hinting in the nearby rock-pools. Marker buoys are stationed to prevent boats from entering the designated swimming area, however, no lifeguard service is available. At this beach, it is important to avoid the area that sits directly under the cliffs due to the risk of rock-falls. In the evenings, you may be lucky enough to have private barbeques on the beach. Additionally, Ness Cove is incredibly dog-friendly, you are expected to clean up after your pet and there is even an exclusive dog-exercise area. Sadly, the beach lacks any form of facilities, however, toilets, shops and cafes can be located at the tunnel’s entrance on the cliff-top.
