Hallsands beach is a stunning stretch of shingle perfect for explorations. Its northerly end connects it with neighbouring Beesands and you can continue your stroll all the way to Strete some 6 miles away – just bear in mind that you need to watch the tides so you don’t get cut off on your travels! The beach was once home to a thriving fishing village with over 100 people living there, two shops and a beloved pub. But on one particularly brutal winter’s night in 1917, an Easterly gale combined with an especially high tide and the village faced near destruction – only one house remained habitable. The destruction was a direct result of the Royal Navy dredging the shingle which had protected the village, and it took the villagers seven long years of fighting to win the compensation they deserved. Now the beach is vulnerable once more; storms have ripped away the shingle leaving the beach exposed to the elements.
