Hartland Quay is a stunning beach with a mix of pebble and rock, sand and towering cliffs. You can find many interesting geological formations in the rocks including jagged shapes and layers. The tranquil waters provide ideal conditions for snorkelling, surfing and fishing, while the wild waves that crash against the rocks are a spectacle. As you explore this beautiful Devon Heritage Coast, be sure to keep an eye out for the abundance of rock pools, waterfalls and bird’s nests. Access to the beach can be found from a slipway but unfortunately, due to the steepness it is inaccessible to wheelchairs. There is a car park on the cliffs above and a hotel, restaurant and toilets available at the top. As you take in the gorgeous views of the beach and coastline, be sure to pop into the Hartland Quay Museum to uncover the legends of shipwrecks and smuggling associated with this coast. The South West Coast Path is also accessible from here with warnings of hazardous cliffs – so take care if you explore this route. Further along you can reach the hamlet of Stoke and the town of Hartland is around 2 miles away. The beach gained notoriety in 2017 with the sighting of a colossal whale carcass on the rocks.
