Come and enjoy the beauty of Mattiscombe Beach – known also as Mattiscombe Sands – and you won’t be disappointed by the sand and rock beach that is backed by rolling hills and low-rise cliffs! Explore and take in the spectacular rock formations which are shown to best advantage at low tide. Bathing has to be done with caution as there’s no lifeguard and rip tides and submerged rocks in the water can be treacherous. The beach is quite exposed so wrap up well if swimming. The South-West Coastal Path runs close to the beach giving great opportunities to go for scenic walks in either direction, with great vistas over the bays and coves of this area of the coast. It can be a tricky spot to get to – so don’t expect the beach to be busy – but it’s well worth the effort. Get to the car park at Start Point and take the path on the right as you look out to the lighthouse. The 10-minute walk to the beach is not suitable for those with mobility problems. You’ll find no facilities at the beach, but a portaloos is located in the Start Point car park.
