Woodhill Bay, otherwise known as Portishead beach, is a delightful mixture of sand, grass, pebbles and rocks on the south side of Battery Point. With its westerly facing location, make sure you come down here to witness some truly majestic sunsets, with the lighthouse on the headland being particularly photogenic. This spot comprises two parts – Woodhill and Kilkenny Bay. It can be hard to tell which is which sometimes! Each part is steeped in history, with recent fortifications being just one of the many historical landmarks. In addition, if you’re lucky enough you may even find fossils among the Carboniferous and Devonian rocks.The surroundings offer plenty of amenities for you and your family to enjoy such as play areas, bowling greens, and tennins courts. If it’s a hot day, you can even dip into the open air lido. While most other beaches along the Severn Estuary advise against swimming, Portishead has the added bonus of not being suitable due to the strength of the tidal currents and the risk of the mudflats.
