Located on the Isle of Purbeck (not an island at all!), Chapman’s Pool is nestled in the shelter of St Aldhelm’s Head and is home to notable cliffs which form a high backing. Though the nearest car park is a bit of a walk away, this peaceful little cove is worth the effort. You’ll spot a couple of fishermen’s huts and a slipway, where local fishermen launch from. Notoriously, between 1866 and 1880 there was a lifeboat house, although the service wasn’t too successful. This lagoon-like bay was shaped similarly to the renowned Lulworth Cove, which was crafted by 6000 years of waves eroding away at the harder Portland stone at the entrance which exposed the softer rock from behind. Regular landslides keep the landscape ever-changing. For avid fossil-hunters, Chapman’s Pool is a true jackpot. Ammonites, reptiles, and shells are commonly uncovered here, but take caution as the cliffs are unstable.
